He’s killing American industry! I am (gratefully) semi-retired but during my twilight years, I offered my employer a part-time role performing a valuable task for which I had become an expert. This new role coincided with the onset of Trump’s unwavering determination to F*** UP the world, and within a week or two of submitting my cost/benefit analysis to my superiors, my most important supplier began shifting their new tariff burden onto us. They didn’t hide it. They just inserted a line item that I did not order: “Tariffs”. At first, they may made no attempt to absorb these new “taxes” and didn’t appear to open to negotiation. Naturally, this demanded some reflection by our management team. Delays hurt my throughput, and this resulted in a shortage of inventory. In the end, we pressed for some dispensation and our supplier made some concessions on an outstanding order, but a relationship that had been fostered over decades had become a minefield of distrust. To date, we’ve had no choice but to consent to paying whatever tariffs are in place at the time of an order. Work flow and inventory have become so erratic that our plans have to change frequently to accommodate the unpredictable. It may take years if we ever hope to recover these added costs. Tariffs are not making this country stronger, and it is certainly not making it great. What it is doing is destroying a small business that had been promised prosperity. All while lining the pockets of billionaires. This is the reality. Be clear about this: Our international trading partners are NOT PAYING the tariffs. We are.
